International students

On December 24, Eighth CASC Space Law China Cup International Space Law Moot Court Competition (in English) was held at the Beijing Polytechnic University. CUPL sent two teams composed of six students to participate in the competition. After fierce competition, CUPL teams earned three awards: the National Championship Award, the Best Memorandum Award (Respondent), the Best Oral English Award (Applicant). With honors, once again CUPL gain great achievements in the Lachs International Space Law Moot Court Competition.

The CASC Cup International Space Law Moot Court Competition is organized by the China Institute of Space Law, funded by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), hosted by Beijing Polytechnic University. The legal issues involve a collision in orbit in outer space, removal of the satellite and state liability. Judges are experts with rich teaching experiences, research and practical experiences, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, University of Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO).

The current number of participating teams are eight, from the six well-known institutions, including: Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing University of Technology, East China University of Political Science, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Zhongnan University. Schools attach great importance to the contest: some institutions sent foreign students and even doctoral candidates to participate in the competition. It is the most competitive national competition over the years.

Our school has sent two teams, coached by the International Law Professor Li Juqian. The first team members are Shang Weiwei (oralist), Li Siqing (oralist), Li Huihui (researcher), The second team members the Zhu Min (oralist), Chen Peishan (debater), Li Nan (researcher). CUPL teams competed calmly and gracefully. Their arguments fully reflect the high professional quality, and courteous demeanor. The result is satisfactory: the first team won the National Championship, the best Memorial and Chen Peisan from the second team won the best oralist.

In the general round, the first opposite was East China University of Political Science team, second was the Beijing Institute of Technology team. Players’ solid legal foundation, fluent expression in English and excellent debating skills left a deep impression upon judges. At last, the first team went into the final round. In the final, the first team won the favor and acclaim of judges and got the championship.

The competition gained support from Dean’s office and International Law School. Professor Ling Yan and previous participators Chengde Wei, Huang Cheng, Wen Tianqi shared former expetiences. After the competition, organizers also held a National Space Law Moot Court Competition Symposium. Professor Ling Yan and Cheng Dewei made the conference keynote address.

International Law School attached great attention to the competition. Before the match, Professor Zhang Liying, vice president, sent a letter to encourage participators. The training began in the last semester, following the previous pattern: Professor Li Juqian personally taught "Space Law Moot Court" program, and served as instructor of the team . Members of the school teams were selected by mid-November, through joint efforts and hard work, within one month, written and oral arguments for both sides are completely effectively.

After the final, CUPL players diligently seize the opportunity to consult academic questions with judges, especially with Professor Zhao Yun. We look forward to participate in international competition in 2012 and win honor for China!
